AI Research Experience Summer Opportunity for Undergraduates


Do you want to learn more about AI technologies such as those behind ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and CoPilot?

Would you like to work alongside researchers working in areas such as materials data science, animal ecology, biomedical imaging, and engineering?

Do you want to learn about using supercomputers to help solve difficult scientific challenges?

The annual summer AI Research Experience (AIRE) program is seeking 10 postsecondary students in Ohio to work on AI-focused research projects with university research teams during summer 2026. The program runs for about nine weeks, includes in-person or hybrid work at approximately 36 hours per week, and provides a $5,000 stipend distributed across the program.

Participants are matched with research teams at Case Western Reserve University, The Ohio State University, or the University of Cincinnati. The OH-SCIPE team provides training and guidance on the AI and HPC tools needed for each project.

The 2026 Program

  • Week 1: In-person kickoff event followed by virtual training in Python, Linux, and HPC basics.
  • Weeks 2-8: Project work with regular meetings with science mentors and CIP office hours.
  • Week 9: Project wrap-up, final deliverables, and presentations.
  • Program window: Week of May 18, 2026 through July 20, 2026.

Eligibility

  • You must be 18 or older.
  • You must be a domestic undergraduate student at a postsecondary institution in Ohio.
  • You must be eligible to work in the U.S. without visa sponsorship.
  • You must have completed one or more programming courses or have equivalent programming experience.
  • You must have access to a laptop or desktop computer for any remote work.

  • Tentative offer notifications: April 13, 2026.
